Pardon?

Test Your Vowel Power is part of a PBS show called “Do You Speak American?”. I obviously don’t (speak American) because all my answers/guesses are wrong. I swear that the fifth word was “Troy”. Take the test and let me know how you did, especially if you are American.

  1. As you know, I’m a born-and-raised midwesterner, and I got none of them right. That lady has some bizarre inflections.

  2. I’m American, Californian to be precise, and only got 2 right. The clips of “busses” and “socks” didn’t sound anything like what I’m used to. I don’t know if that’s due to bad sound quality of the clips or just an odd accent on the speaker’s part.

  3. I’m American as well. I only got one right (desk). Seriously though, maybe I just live in the wrong part of the country, but I’ve never heard anyone say “block” and “sock” like they did on there. “Desk” “grade” and “busses” I can imagine though.

  4. I got only block and desk right. The other ones were so skewed. Socks sounded like slacks.

  5. California born and raised, and only got desk right. Socks sounded a lot like sax. They didn’t even have an American say those phrases. It sounded like an English or an Irish person.

  6. I got 3 out of 5 right (I’m American), but I had to listen to them all at least twice. Yikes!
