Developing B&W film with Tea

Sunny Spot

After searching the web for information on tea-based film developer and not finding much, except for this rather inspiring forum thread, I decided to just bite the bullet and make my own tea developer based on what little information I had. I didn’t have black tea but I did have some orange pekoe, green, peppermint, and pomegranate green teas in my kitchen cupboard so I thought, what the heck, let’s get some water in a saucepan, throw some tea bags into it, boil it, mix it with vitamin C and washing soda, and see what happens!

While the teas were steeping, I shot a roll of Fuji Acros 100 around the house with my long-abandoned Chinese medium format SLR camera, the Great Wall DF. If the tea developer didn’t work, I wouldn’t be too sad because I can always re-shoot the same things all over again some other time if I want to.

While I was busy preparing the film for developing, Troy got home from work and insisted on going grocery shopping. I didn’t really want to wait until we got back home to develop the film. Originally, I thought I’d do a 30 or 45-minute development, agitating every 3 or 5 minutes, but since we had to go, I decided to do a 2-hour semi-stand development. I ended up agitating only 3 times in total. Then I washed and fixed as normal and washed again. And then, the moment of truth: did it work? It did! Yaaay!

I did notice the white spots on the negatives when I was hanging it to dry but didn’t think much about it until I started scanning and saw the many dark spots on the scans. It was kind of disheartening at first but then it grew on me. The dark spots actually give a vintagey feel to the shots which I find rather endearing. I hope that I’ll be able to replicate the effect the next time I decide to develop with tea again, which is going to be soon. I really can’t wait to experiment again with different combinations of tea!

If you’re interested, there’s a couple more pictures from the roll developed in tea (other than the one at the beginning of this post) in this Flickr set.

Spring Migration of Tundra Swans

I don’t enjoy hockey, don’t skate or ski, but I like snow in the wintertime (the more the better, with strong emphasis on ‘in the wintertime’).
I find the winter landscape beautiful.
I’ve been out and about with a camera when the temperature is under -10°C simply because I felt like it.
I’ve been to Winnipeg in winter where I walked the frozen Red River and celebrated Louis Riel Day with the locals at Le Festival du Voyageur.
I’ve had ice-cream cravings in winter.
I’ve seen the Northern Lights.
I’ve been to 8 out of 10 Canadian provinces (soon to be 9 out of 10).
I’ve been to all 4 of the Great Lakes in Canada (I’d go to all 5 Great Lakes but Lake Michigan just isn’t part of Canada).
I’ve been to the iconic Spirit Island (which turns out to be not much of an island).
I’ve been to Tofino and gone whale-watching.
I’ve seen a rainbow by the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls.
I’ve taken the Cabot Trail.
I’ve had scallops in Digby, Nova Scotia (the so-called Scallop Capital of the World).
I’ve had a lobster in Prince Edward Island.
I had Troy drive me to Quebec just to have poutine. In Quebec.
I’ve shaken hands and had pictures taken with Rick Mercer.
I’ve no problem with gay marriage.
I embrace free-thinking.
I am Canadian!

(I gave up my Indonesian citizenship and took an oath to become a Canadian citizen on March 30, 2011.)

Dental Woes

No Picnic

I’ve probably used the picture above in another post in the past but thought I’d post it again because it just won me a new camera bag through a photo contest held by Book Depository! There were 2260 entries when the contest ended. Who knew I’d be one of the 10 winners. I only entered one photo (out of the three allowed) and just kind of forgot about it until they sent me a message about me being one of the 10 winners. It’s kind of nice to know that soon I’ll be able to put my camera with some lenses and a laptop in the same bag when I’m travelling.

Um, what was I going to write about again? Oh right. The sad state of my poor teeth. I’ve been having a toothache since Monday. Didn’t tell Troy about it until Wednesday morning when the pain got a bit unbearable. He then made me an appointment with his trusty dentist in Waterloo who was willing to see me the next day, i.e. today. The last time I saw a dentist was probably when I was still in middle school. It was that long ago. Ever since my trusty dentist in Indonesia (who had been my dentist since I was a wee little kid) died, I just couldn’t trust another dentist. But now I think I’ve found another dentist I could trust. Troy’s dentist turns out to be not scary at all!

Long story short, I have a tooth extraction, a root canal and a dental implant in a not so distant future. And the dentist’s only looked at two of my molars. Yup, serves me right for not going earlier. That dentist visit was super long overdue. If last year was the year of optometrist/ophthalmologist visits, this year is definitely going to be the year of dentist visits. Not really looking forward to it but I just keep telling myself that after this long string of dentist visits, I’ll be able to eat like a normal person again. Haven’t been able to do that for a while so that’s something to look forward to.

Anyway, this will be the first of two blog updates I’m supposed to make this week since it’s March already and the second step in the Operation Blog Revival’s 6-step program is to blog twice a week in March and April. Not sure how I’m going to keep with it since my life is not really all that interesting and there are only so many things I could talk about but we’ll see. I’ll figure something out. Someone told me once that I’m resourceful. :)

Newfoundland Trip and Giveaway Winner!

Window Seat

We haven’t gone on a trip outside Ontario since our trip to Winnipeg, Manitoba in February 2008 (Winnipeg! In winter!) so I’ve been super excited about our upcoming trip to Newfoundland, especially since we booked the flights this past Thursday. The trip is not until late this spring but WestJet was having a sale and the flights we wanted were roughly half price. Might as well get them. Also, it helped us decide when we’d like to leave. We weren’t sure before. We only knew it was going to be some time in June, but now we have dates. Progress!

I’ve been trying to decide whether to spend more time in Gros Morne National Park or in L’Anse aux Meadows. Both places sound just as exciting. One has fjords, the other has icebergs. Really, how do I decide? I just hope that we’ll be lucky enough to have some good weather while we’re there. From what I heard, the weather in Newfoundland is unpredictable at best. I don’t really mind some fog. It looks nice in pictures. Just as long as it’s not so thick that you can’t see a big moose crossing the road. That wouldn’t be good. And Newfoundland has a lot of moose!

I’ve been so busy doing research relating to our Newfoundland trip that I almost forgot to blog. I would’ve let this week pass without a blog entry if I weren’t trying to stick with my Operation Blog Revival mission. That and I need to announce the winner of my 11th blogiversary giveaway! Without further ado, the winner is… Dave2 of Blogography! Yay! I’ve won a couple of awesome things from Blogography blogiversary giveaways in the past so I’m happy to see the Random.org generator thingy picked his number. Congrats, Dave! I’ll be in touch with you. And thanks to all the commenters to my blogiversary post for your participation. Stick around, there might be another giveaway next year and it might be YOUR lucky day. ;)

Exciting Times, 11th Blogiversary, and a Giveaway

Balzac's

I’ve had people recognizing me in real life from reading my blog, but for the first time ever, I had someone recognizing me from my Twitter avatar this Friday and guess who it was? It was Rick Mercer! I’m not sure how many non-Canadians have ever heard of Mr. Mercer. Let’s just say that he is one of the funniest and most loved TV personalities in Canada. He has a weekly TV show on the CBC called the Mercer Report in which he visits unusual events and attractions across Canada and makes fun of politicians. You can watch videos from his show on YouTube if you’re interested.

Anyway, a friend of ours got us tickets to see the taping of the Mercer Report at the CBC studio last year and it was for this past Friday. Before Troy and I left, I posted a tweet saying that I will be spending today in Toronto and will meet up with friends for Indian dinner before heading out to see the taping of the Mercer Report. Fast forward to after the Indian dinner. We got to the CBC building at a decent time before the line got too long and after being transported to the 10th floor, we got seated on the second row, which was pretty good. The show taping went really smoothly, everything was shot in one take. We got to watch pre-shot segments for the next week’s episode on the many TV screens hanging over the studio and they recorded our reactions, claps, laughs and scoffs for the show. No laugh tracks here! When the camera wasn’t rolling, Mr. Mercer would interact with the audience and made us laugh. I loved it when he said that he encourages flash photography in the studio when the camera isn’t rolling.

The taping of the show was over in, I believe, less than an hour. While lining up to leave the studio for the elevator, I heard about there being two lines: one for the elevator and one for those who would like to meet with Mr. Mercer. We decided to join the latter. I wasn’t really sure what I was going to say to him when our turn came. Thought I’d leave Troy to do the talking for the two of us. When it was our turn, Mr. Mercer greeted us and shook our hands warmly before he turned to me and ask, “Did you have Indian?” He totally caught me off guard with that question. “How did you know?” “I read your tweet! You look Indian and you wear glasses in your Twitter icon.” “Wow. I’m not Indian but that is so cool! So you actually read all the @replies on Twitter?” “Not always but I had an hour to kill before the show and I like to see if anyone tweets about going to the taping.”
